Exactly how would a Directly Elected Mayor stop the madness at Croydon Planning?

A very good point Chris and one that nobody seems to have addressed so far. All of the discussion seems to be based upon what the problem is, but I'm yet to hear a logical argument as to why a directly elected mayor would be the solution. Especially given that none of our neighbouring boroughs seem to need a directly elected mayor in order to make sensible planning decisions.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that a directly elected mayor would "listen more" to residents with regards to planning, in fact there is a huge danger that they would listen less. If provided with a direct mandate, a democratically elected mayor might very well believe they have carte blanche to do whatever they pleased. This is entirely Sadiq Khan's justification for his changes to the planning rules which are driving these problems in the first place.

Neither has anyone considered exactly how a directly elected mayor would work with the council with regards to planning. We could end up with less oversight and less scrutiny than we have at the moment. Nobody has considered the unintended consequences of having a directly elected mayor with this extremely ill-thought out proposal.

Fundamentally the problems we face with regards planning in Croydon are caused by too great a concentration of power in the council and Town Hall. This proposal does nothing to address, in fact in all likelihood it will makes things much worse.

Many thanks to Richard Howard for your contribution. I have read the comments and I see from a previous answer that you are promoting devolved power to parish council level and PR in line with your Lib Dem policies.
I have been told that the best way of stopping the madness of Croydon planning committee is by having a democratically elected mayor. My Coulsdon MP promotes this idea. It would be useful to hear any other opinions.
We must stop this folly continuing, as every second Thursday evening at the town hall, a 6 to 4 majority of the voting committee promote their political agenda by passing over 90% of the applications. The developers and land speculators are having a field day!
We, the residents have lost our democratic right to have our wishes and concerns addressed.
